202 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless composition that offers properties comparable to Type 301. This alloy is composed of chromium, nickel, and manganese, and its creation was initially intended to reduce nickel wastage. It may become slightly magnetic when cold worked, but remains non-magnetic in its annealed form. In comparison to Type 301, this grade contains less manganese and is unable to be hardened by heat or thermal treatment; however, it can withstand high tensile strength when cold worked.

Type 202 stainless steel is counted among the many stainless steel types and is common due to its composition that bears similarities to Type 301 stainless steel. The chief difference being the marginally lower chromium and nickel content. Additionally, its thermal expansion coefficient is 13.0 m/mC (or 7.2 in/inF), its thermal conductivity is 16.3 W/mK (or 113 BTU in/hr.ft.F), its specific heat capacity is 500 J/kgK (or 0.12 BTU/lb/F), and its electrical resistivity and magnetic permeability are both notable, being 0.74 cm (656 ohmcmil/ft), and 1.02 H/m)10^6, or 62.7 H/m)10^3, respectively.
