A distinctive element of many square tube pipe boots is that they are made by beginning with a rectangular piece of fabric. Allowing for twice as much fabric along the width and length of the tube, fold the material in half with the wrong sides together then sew along the two longest sides and one short side. Seam allowance should then be trimmed, and once complete turn the product so that the right side is exposed.

Gathering your fabric, make the top of the boot by folding it twice – once while bringing the wrong sides together. Stitching along the side until complete, trim the excess fabric and turn it to face the correct side out. After folding down the top of the boot until the raw side is even with the tube’s peak, sew around its circumference, leaving approximately half an inch of space.

Folding the fabric a second time, with the wrong sides together, sew along the long side and one of the shorter sides to create an enclosed cylinder. Neatly trim away the excess fabric and turn the tube inside out. Finally, draw the bottom of the boot up towards the tube, so that it lines up evenly with its lower edge. Secure in place by stitching about a half inch from its edge.

Turn the fabric inside-out and fold it in half again, so that the wrong sides of the material are touching. With a sewing machine, stitch along the long side and trim excess fabric away from the seam. Flip the tube right-side out and fold in one side of the boot until the rough edge is even with the side of the tube. Using a 1/2″ gap, sew around the side of the boot for extra reinforcement.
