Convy had a knack for athletics and was a star player of both baseball and basketball during his high school years. Furthermore, he showed creativity through his performance in the school choir and production in drama club. After his time at high school concluded, Convy was rewarded for his excellence with a baseball scholarship to the University of Minnesota – a testament to his undeniable talent.

Following an injury that truncated his baseball career, Convy earned his drama degree from the University of Minnesota before relocating to Los Angeles with the scope of exploring a career in show business.

Convy’s introduction to Hollywood began with him filling in as a stand-in for the venerated actor James Dean. He then proceeded to venture into stunt work and small parts for a range of movies and television shows. In the early ’60s, Convy had the opportunity to take on a more regular role, that of a contestant on the renowned game show Hollywood Squares.

With his handsome features and sharp comedy, Convy was an immediate fan-favorite on Hollywood Squares. Crowds rejoiced any time his friendly face appeared on the show’s iconic tic-tac-toe game board, and he remained a regular cast member until at least the early eighties.

Convy’s illustrious career as a game show host extended far beyond Hollywood Squares. After finding success as the ever-present host, he subsequently was the presenter of many acclaimed programs in the genre, namely The Newlywed Game, Tattletales, and Win, Lose or Draw.

Drawing on his charismatic presence, Convy managed to carve out an impressive acting career for himself, featuring a number of onscreen appearances including his roles in the iconic productions The Love Boat, Fantasy Island and The A-Team.

Despite achieving a great deal in his life, Convy’s time on this earth came to an abrupt end in 1991. He was robbed of the potential for further successes at the tender age of 57, when a deadly brain hemorrhage claimed his life.

An individual of many talents, Bert Convy was an accomplished athlete, a highly successful game show host, and a public favorite in the film industry. His mark, however, will be forever affixed by his fondness for a smoking pipe.
