galvanized pipe vs square pipe

Steel is a strong material used in a wide array of applications and when properly treated it can perform well for years to come. Galvanized steel pipes, with their thin layer of zinc, help to keep the metal from oxidizing and ensure its durability. A square pipe is another form of this versatile material, cut into a precise shape that can be used for many types of tasks.

Galvanized pipe is a popular choice for plumbing and water-related projects due to its rust and corrosion-resistant zinc coating. Not only is it great for these applications, but the same zinc layer provides an extra layer of insulation, allowing galvanized pipe to be used in both heating and cooling systems.

A must-have in structural projects, the square pipe is a godsend for any handyman. Its shape gives it an extra boost of strength, making it perfect for plumbing and other water-related applications. Additionally, the square structure limits the susceptibility of the pipe to rust and frigid temperatures.

Looking for the perfect pipe? Both galvanized and square piping offer a wide variety of size, length, width, and thickness options. Galvanized pipe has the added perk of varying degrees of zinc coating thickness, ranging from barely-there to guarantee-durability. Square pipe can be specified with any width measurement or your preferred thickness.

While square pipe proves more affordable, galvanized pipe adds an extra layer of security to the equation – the price increasing with greater thicknesses in its protective zinc coating. Therefore, you can expect to pay a tad bit more if opting to go with galvanized.

Although square pipe is easier to cut than galvanized pipe, the latter’s zinc coating can prove to be a challenge when getting a smooth cut. This renders cutting galvanized pipe more of a task than completely circumscribing a square tube.

Galvanized pipe, with its zinc coating, traditionally offers more protection against rust than square pipe. However, given time the coating can diminish, leaving the steel exposed to the air and moisture which can result in corrosion. In comparison, due to its lack of protective finish, square pipe is less likely to suffer such damage.

In comparison to square pipe, welding galvanized pipe can be quite challenging due to the zinc coating which can interfere with achieving a quality weld. Conversely, working with square pipe is more straightforward.

When necessary to use pipes, it’s best to select those with a square structure. Although galvanized pipes are more common, they make it hard to have a leak-proof seal because the zinc coating creates an obstacle. Square pipes, however, are much less likely to present this issue.

While painting square pipe may be relatively straightforward, galvanized pipe can prove to be a bit of a challenge. This is largely due to the zinc coating which can make it hard for paint to stick to the surface.

Galvanized pipe is no match for square pipe when it comes to rust resistance. The zinc coating that gives this type of pipe its name gradually wears away, tagging on the exposure to moist air which can further its corrosion. Conversely, square pipe is much more tolerant against these environmental effects.
